The CrEW played their first ‘home’ game on the Calthorpe Ground in the afternoon of Sunday 2nd August 2020.

Like last Sunday the format and opponents were the same (pairs cricket and Stoke Newington). Stoke Newington won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Our opening batting partnership of Clare and Tina saw a wicket fall in the 2nd over but soon everyone got into the batting groove and the score started adding up. Batting prowess was shown by Emma who had the top score of 13 runs followed by Gail with 10 and Clare and Ali scoring 9 runs each. We set a total score of 229 for 5 wickets so 230 was our opposition’s target.

The 2nd innings saw our team taking the field with Ali, Lea and Serena bowling tightly not giving many runs away. Gail and Tina bowled fast and Clare and Monika took 3 wickets each. Field placings were controlled by Monika with expert guidance from Emma who also kept wicket very well. There were a couple of missed catches or near collisions – due to lack of calling – and some excellent catches taken as well. There was the odd boundary, but our players were excellent in chasing balls and limiting runs. Fantastic wicket keeping from Emma who also kept the spirits and team energy up with her shouts of encouragement despite a glove slipping off now and then.

Our opponents scored 159 for 12 so another resounding win for CECC Women’s team. The bar was a very welcome respite post-match following a most enjoyable day of cricket played against wonderful opponents under clear sunny skies at our pristine home ground – what a way to show off our club and women’s cricket! Cheers and claps were gratefully appreciated by our first audience of supporters.
